Quest for the Wii…

So I went to  a party this weekend and ended up playing with a Wii. The game system. Perverts.

Anyway, I was fairly underwhelmed. Graphics were lame and the control is chaotic. That said, Wii sports is a launch tech demo, not exactly the best and brightest. I’d kinda sorta been planning on maybe possibly getting one after E3 next month, if there’s no Wii HD announcement. This might have me off that.

Damnit Link, stop showing me pictures of Peach and Zelda making out, I’ve changed my mi- holy crap is that Samus joining in??

Lazy Blu-ray Review: Dragon Ball Z Kai: Part One

Call me a sucker but I had to pick this up. I remember when DBZ was running on Cartoon Network’s Toonami thinking DBZ was the stupidest thing since Pokemon… And yet I never missed it. (Like Pokemon, go Psyduck!)

So, does DBZ hold up? Yes, yes it does. And Kai does it even better. Esentially Kai is a director’s cut of the original series. It’s for the most part the same animation, but chopped up and reedited to cut out the annoying crap. (Goku gets his drivers license… yay?) In the 13 episodes included with Part 1, Raditz is defeated, Goku trains with King Kai, Piccolo train Gohan, Nappa is defeated and the set ends with Goku squaring off against Vegeta. Good stuff.

So how’s it look. Well, this is the original animation from what… 20 years ago? It' looks a little grainy in areas, but really that’s to be expected. What’s somewhat shocking is the opening and closing, they’re brand new animation and it’s a little jarring how clean and sharp it looks. Not that the series itself looks bad, it’s just old. Techniques change and what was acceptable then, isn’t now.

Lazy Movie Review: Gamer

Wow, this sucked.

Has Gerard Butler done anything good besides 300? The guy has gone from sex scenes with Lena Headey (hrm… Lena Headey…) where was I, oh yes – to pissing in the gas tank of a pickup truck to get it running. I’m not sure how realistic that is as I know jack about cars, but I’d think if that worked we wouldn’t be as dependant on fossil fuels as we are.

Butler’s character, Kable I think was his name, is in the slammer for murder. He volunteered to be an ‘icon’ in a ‘game’ called Slayers. So they injected nanites into his brain that let some 17 year old kid control him during the ‘game’. And the kid does.. for 2 sessions. Then these hacker guys free him and… stuff happens.

It’s not that it’s not understandable, it’s just stupid and I don’t feel like typing it out.

I think the whole movie works better if you look at from ‘a certain point of view’ (yay Obi-wan!). See, John de Lancie plays a network executive that’s eager to get an interview with the creator of Slayers. Only, I don’t he’s actually a network suit, oh no. What we have here is Q, as in The Q Continuum just @#$%ing around with humanity again. It’s all one big game played by Jean’s Luc’s stalker.

Finally - does Michael C Hall suck in everything except Dexter? (I understand Six Feet Under is good, it’s on my list).

Lazy Basterd’s Jukebox: Tank! by The Seatbelts

An extended live performance of Tank!, opening theme to the classic – Cowboy Bebop.

I’m sure the composer Yoko Kanno will appear in other posts.

Update: Actually, I’m an idiot. Yoko Kanno composed Rise from a few days ago. This is her second appearance.

Lazy Movie Review: Iron Man 2

This review is going to be exceptionally lazy – this review from Pajiba sums up my thoughts quite nicely. And omg, the first paragraph created some nice visuals in my head. So, read that.

And yes - stay till after the credits. Highlight for spoiler:
A S.H.I.E.L.D. agent investigates a huge crater and finds a hammer.

So, we’ve got a solid, fun action movie that’s not quite up there with Iron Man.

Sony is the Devil

So I got my new 500GB hard drive from Newegg.com and was all set to install that badboy. I took out my PS3 form it’s shelf. I cleaned the shelf and wipes off the system. Then I opened up the drive bay and found a nifty blue screw holding in place. With a quick twist of the wrist that was out and I pulled out the old 60GB.

The drive itself is contained in a metal sled and it’s held tot he sled by 4 teeny tiny screws… MADE OF SILLY PUTTY THAT STRIP IF YOU LOOK AT IT WRONG!! So, now I have a very large hard drive and and very small hard drive permanently attached to the device that I need to attach to the very large hard drive in order to make that damn thing work.

I trip the the playstation forums indicated I’d have two options. Handle  t as an out of warranty replacement which will get me another 60GB drive screwed in by He-Man that I’ll likely have the same issue with. Or I can try and sweet talk a Sony rep over the phone and for a small fee expect a replacement sled in 3 weeks or so.

I went to eBay. Replacement sled will be here in a couple days and then… then, I shall have a stupidly large hard drive I’ll never fill up! Buawahahaha!

I have to go cry now.

UPDATE: I should point out the old drive is stuck in the sled, so it is still usable. My PS3 isn’t dead. I’m just stuck with the old drive for a bit.

Lazy Basterd’s Jukebox: Rise by Origa

I’ve found that a lot of anime theme song and soundtracks are just plain awesome. Here’s the theme to Ghost in the Shell 2nd gig.

No idea what that Russian chick is saying, but it sounds great.

UPDATE: Yes this paticular video has a translation, bite me.

PS3 Minor Upgrade

Soon, my PS3 60gig will be 500gig! Buawhahaha!

Lazy Blu-Ray Review: Planet Earth

I recently picked up the BBC documentary Planet Earth. I watched the first part last night. Wow. I live there?!Made me want to become a Boy Scout or something – until the Great White shark jumped 20feet out of the ocean and swallowed a seal whole. That, made me realize TVs are our friends. There’s shit with teeth out there.

A few highlights:

  • Polar bear cubs sliding down a  snow bank, if you don’t smile you have no soul - no soul at all
  • Baby elephant separated from the heard follows his mothers tracks, the wrong way – must be dust in my eye
  • monkeys don’t handle rivers well and it’s hilarious

And this, while not from Planet Earth, is animals and awesome.

Don’t mess with mommy.
